FAQs About Women Business Owners Mentoring
Business mentoring is a big business these days. It seems that everyone these days has or is a business coach or business mentor. There are all kinds of business mentors, too. You will find mentors that specialize in women business owners mentoring, men’s business mentoring, mentors that charge for their expertise and even mentors that give their time to others for free. If you have considered finding a mentor to help you out, here are some frequently asked questions.

How do I choose a good business mentor? That is a common question. First of all, you will want to pick a mentor who has plenty of expertise in your line of work. All businesses are different and they all have different requirements and needs. You will need to pick someone that can offer you advice on your specific profession. Then, you will want to find a business mentor that takes an interest in you. This should be someone you can talk to through email, phone or in person and someone you feel comfortable with. This is the only way to find a mentor that you can work with and one that will help you succeed.

How much time does it take to get good advice from a mentor? This is a broad question with several answers. The time you spend with your mentor will really vary a great deal. For instance, at the beginning of your relationship, you will want to take the time to get to know the other person on a professional level. As your mentoring relationship grows, you will get to know them on a more personal level. You may find that you spend more time talking or emailing that person as the relationship progresses. You may choose to spend one lunch each week or a month with your mentor, or you may find that you like dropping your email a quick email a few times a week. The bottom line is to find what works for you and your mentor and establish that relationship on a professional level.

What will I ask my mentor? That is completely up to you. However, you may want to remember that when you first get to know your mentor, you will want to be very clear about your expectations and your mentor should do the same. Don’t monopolize his or her time and don’t expect too much out of your mentor. He or she has a busy life, too. You will want to set up short meetings and ask your most important questions first. You must remember that your mentor is there for you and you need to do your best to listen (really listen) to what they have to say. They really don’t want your opinion—they want to see you listening to them and taking what they say to heart.

There are many ways that you can utilize your mentor. The best way, however, is to get to know your mentor well and learn from this person.
